We start in Bologna, which is one of the most beautiful cities in Italy. This city and dominated by spectacular architecture from the medieval, renaissance, and baroque periods. Despite its size, Bologna is easy to walk. Our tour begins in the beautiful Piazza Maggiore, a large pedestrian square that marks the oldest part of the city. Built to serve as the symbolic and physical heart of Bologna, the square is surrounded by magnificent medieval buildings such as the Palazzo Podesta. Another landmark here is the Fountain of Neptune, which was built in 1556 by order of the Pope as part of his beatification program. Nearby you will find the Basilica of San Petronio, the sixth largest church in Europe. This extraordinary structure would have been the largest cathedral in Italy if the Pope had not stopped the construction otherwise it would have dwarfed the size of St Peter’s Cathedral in Rome. The Palazzo dell’Archiginnasio, once home to the University of Bologna, was built next door to fill the space that the Basilica would have occupied if it had followed the original plans. It contains a fascinating 17th-century theater where corpses were publicly dissected to further anatomical knowledge. Continue the visit to the 2 Towers and the Jewish quarter.
